EdCom: Wiki experiences in the classroom

In this podcast, I interview Patricia Abbot, lecturer and course co-ordinator of Theology, Psychology and Human Experience at the Canberra campus of the Australian Catholic University, about why she decided to use a wiki as an assessment item in her course.

For the assignment, students were asked to buddy-up and then develop a wikispace around a particular topic. Patricia describes her experiences with using wikis in class, her students’ attitudes towards using the wiki and the types of skills that they needed to succeed in the task, and what she’d do differently next time. Blackwood High School Principal Susan Hyde is my guest this month on EdCom and she talks to us about how to engage 21st century students through the curriculum. Susan is a self-confessed theory junkie and her current passion is exploring the notion of connectivism and how ICTs in education can help students to make sense of the content that is so easily available to them on the Web. Susan talks about the International Baccalaureate (IB) curriculum and how to work teaching and learning across the disciplines, as well as the effects of Web 2.0 on education and the Net Generation. She despises what she calls ‘ideas assassins’ and encourages all teachers to explore the intellectual landscape of theory and thinking.

EdCom: Commercialisation and the university

Lawyer Priya Subramaniam, who also tutors in Law at Flinders University, is my guest on EdCom this month. In this episode, Priya describes her experiences as both a student and a teacher, and identifies some of the changes that she’s noticed over the past 15 years or so in the Academy. Priya also discusses her thoughts on the increasing pressures that are placed on academics to meet bureaucratic — rather than intellectual — targets, and tells us why she’s chosen a career in law over a career in the Academy.

In this interview, I talk to Jude Hines, Deputy Principal at Blackwood, about the importance of teaching philosophy to students to help prepare them for citizenship in the broader community. Jude makes a plea to not ignore the heart of humanity, and to teach students compassion, moral thinking, and how to be human through the teaching of philosophy.

The recording wasn’t actually planned – it simply came about in general chit-chat after we’d recorded a conversation about Blackwood’s cultural program, but I asked Jude if we could turn it into an interview and off we went. Apologies for some of the dodgy sound in this recording – Jude was being bugged by a fly for most of it and she was trying to swat it out of the way!

The quote in the title of this blog post comes from Greg Black, the Chief Executive Officer of Education.au, a major provider of national business and education projects including EdNA, Education Network Australia, which many listeners will be familiar with. I spoke to Greg for my EdCom podcast and you can hear the interview on the MP.com podcast pages.

Greg has spent a long time in education, and has a background in futures thinking and leadership development and in this interview he shares with EdCom his insights into where education is currently ‘at’ and where it’s headed. In particular, Greg talks about how we can start to meet the needs of the 21st century learner, and about using teaching techniques and strategies that will help students to thrive. Greg points to the need for ‘discernment’ and he lays out a challenge to educational leaders to embrace the new technologies for the benefits of students.
